Defence Information Symposium SME Innovation Challenge

In the lead up to the Defence Information Symposium 2016, ISS and techUK ran a small competition, calling on SME's to present their innovative solutions across five current Defence information themes.

And the winner was....Envitia with their enhanced reality geo-spatial solution.

Envitia's entry was for the theme Enhanced Reality extending Geo-Location Services. Enhanced and extended reality solutions are extensively used to provide additional options and suggestions to the mobile user for example when reviewing where to eat, who has visited a venue, and what is their experience and preferred menu options. How can this augmentation assist Defence in providing new insights to the user on their location, the people and the atmosphere/emotions? Situational awareness is key in Defence, and we were looking for options to use readily available data feeds to augment this information and understanding stream.

The modern battlefield is acknowledged to be more complex than a decade ago. Two of the advances that have led to this complexity are the emergence of Location Based Services (LBS) and the volume of data that is available to Defence. In looking to provide enhanced reality through LBS a key challenge will be how to deliver the outputs of geospatial Big Data analytics as a service without overwhelming the Warfighter or deployed communications networks. 

Envitia's solution contends that providing a suite of LBS that operate in the Cloud is the most effective way to achieve address this challenge. By virtualising services offered by the cloud computing environment, Defence would allow a suite of LBS to be deployed in private cloud computing environments in future battlefields and process the atmosphere and emotions in the human terrain. Providing information derived from social media and open sources such that it improves situational awareness can present a significant challenge. Envitia contends that the use of 2D/3D map displays and augmented reality can address this challenge.
